A grinning panda plus also a walking Chinese lantern will be the mascots for the 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympics in Beijing.
The mascots have been shown in a service at Shougang Ice Hockey Arena at the capital.
Beijing mayor Chen Jining explained them as unique, cute and exquisite.
“At a visually attractive manner, they epitomise our aspiration to your Beijing 2022 Games, also extend our warm invitation to friends around the entire world,” he said.
The panda is the mascot. Colourful circles across its confront symbolise 5G technologies and skating tracks, according to the Beijing construction committee’s web site.
The Chinese word for ice, bing hockey, shows strength and purity, while Dwen Dwen means sincerity, liveliness and health, the site said.
A panda’s choice , considered a national treasure, was not a surprise for folks in China. Some were not impressed with the lack of imagination in deciding on a panda As acclaimed Bing Dwen Dwen for its cuteness on media.
The giant panda has been also the emblem for the Asian Games in Beijing in 1990, and was one of the five mascots for the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics.
“Today is an important step on a landmark in Beijing’s journey to generate history as the first in Olympic history, to host both summer and winter editions of the Olympic Games,” International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach said at the ceremony.
Based on a red lantern, Paralympic mascot Shuey Rhon Rhon creates the atmosphere the organising committee stated.
It matches a yellow scarf, a group of yellowish doves round its head and a traditional Chinese paper cutting edge.
Shuey means snow in Chinese and the figures for Rhon Rhon imply inclusiveness and integration, implying world civilisations living and communicating in harmony, the committee stated.
The two mascots were chosen from 35 nations from over 5,800 submissions.
