Lionel Messi confessed that he doesn’t believe Barcelona did”all they could” to attract Neymar back to Spain from Paris Saint-Germain this summer.
Neymar was the topic of one of those transfer sagas of the summer, with the Brazilian appearing place to come back two decades after leaving to get a fee.
But, Sky Sports News reported two months ago that PSG’s unwillingness to lower their valuation, despite Neymar’s offer to cover #17.7m ($20m) towards procuring a deal, ensured the move failed to materialise.
Messi, who formed an attacking triumvirate at Barcelona together with Neymar and Luis Suarez, would have liked to have witnessed up that the trio link once more.
“I would have liked for Neymar to get returned,” Messi told Spanish publication Sport. “Honestly, I’m not certain if Barca did everything they could to sign him but I know it’s tricky to negotiate with PSG.
“I am not disappointed. We have a stunning squad which may challenge for all, even.
“Neymar is one of the very finest on earth. Together with his level and sponsors, it could have been a big gain for the team ”
Messi is under contract before 2021 in Barca but has a clause added in his deal which could see him leave the Nou Camp for nothing in the conclusion of the season.
However, the club have reiterated they stay confident their captain will remain beyond next summer, and Messi himself confirmed he has no plans.
“Barcelona is my home and I really don’t wish to leave,” Messi additional. “But I would like to win. I wish to win the Champions League, it has been a long time since we won it”
