A Life We Can Learn From

“I think there’s a myth that ‘people who have succeeded, they never knew fear.’ We all have insecurities we all have fears. But I don’t let them prevent me from going forward.” – Robin Roberts

In 1993, I had just graduated from Michigan State University and like most recent graduates, was eager to make my mark on the world. Like most recent graduates, I also had no idea where to start. So with the bravado of a 22-year-old, I sent a tape of myself doing tennis sideline commentary to Robin Roberts, who was with ESPN at the time. Not only did Robin watch my tape, she took the time to give me advice on my on-air work, and trust me, there was a lot of advice that needed to be given!

Before you read further, watch this powerful video from ESPN on Robin’s story. It is one full of adversity, matched by incredible courage. As I watched her accept the Arthur Ashe award at the ESPYs, like so many others I was touched by her grace and resilience. I found myself immersed in her story, her strength, and her fearless approach to life.

What can we learn from Robin? There are countless lessons, but a few of her words stuck with me.

1. Make Your Mess Your Message: When we go through adversity of any type, our gut reaction is to hold it inside. But Robin realized she had the ability to impact people who were going through similar challenges. She says the tragedy is not in what happens to us, but in not taking the time to understand its meaning. There is always a bigger picture.

2. Vulnerability Is Real Courage: Robin let the world into her battles, not once but twice. She allowed us to witness moments in her life that were scary, emotional, painful and deeply personal. In showing us her vulnerability, she shared with us her true strength.

3. When Fear Knocks, Let Faith Answer: A lot of times when we think of fearlessness, we think of people who somehow don’t feel fear. But as Robin notes, it’s not about having no doubts or fears; it’s about moving forward in spite of them.

Robin, this part of the blog is to you. Though it was now 20 years ago, I always remember that you took the time to inspire a 22-year old kid seeking advice from anyone who would give her the time of day. I’m sure you did this often, but you made me feel like I belonged and was ready to take on the world! There is no one more fitting for the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage. Congratulations, you are a trailblazer who has carved a path for so many people, and continue to be an inspiration to countless others. Thank you for sharing your journey with us.
