Star attraction Jon Rahm acquired his Open de Espana defence off to a strong start with a 66 in the opening round in Madrid.
Rahm carded six birdies as he with one blemish on the 18th along with Rafa Cabrera Bello finished the day three shots adrift of Kristian Krough Johannessen, who carded a 63 to direct a European Tour event.
Adri Arnaus birdied his final hole are the major home player only ahead of Rahm and Cabrera Bello, while Real Madrid star Gareth Bale was seen cheering on Sergio Garcia, who was under after eight holes but failed to create another birdie during the last 10 as he settled for a 69.
Before after back-to-back birdies using a pitch-in for an eagle-two at the 15th, norwegian Johannessen started with three pars in the 10th, and he reacted with a two in the 17th.
The world No 909 then completed an outstanding days work with four birdies on his final six holes which ensured a two-shot lead over Arnaus, who covered the back-nine in only 29 strokes after he left four birdies and an eagle in a dazzling six-hole burst of scoring.
