I have received so much great advice in my life, so it’s hard to pin just one thing down. Here are a few of the best pieces of advice that I have received:
The best advice from my mom: “Don’t ever forget where you came from, but don’t you dare let it solely define you… you can reinvent yourself; you define you.”
The best advice from my mentors: “Keep your ‘candle power’ – no matter how hard the wind blows, keep shining your light.” “Do the right things for the right reasons; it will never lead you astray.”

“The most important day of your life is the day you find out why you are here. This moment is your Big Bang. And you create your you-niverse. Happy travels.”
Joni Thomas Doolin

This advice is ancient and I imagine I heard it first in a yoga studio or in a book from the beloved and wise monk Thich Nhat Hanh (whose tomes I have carried for years). This is a paraphrase – but the essence is this: “Sometimes it is enough just to present yourself to the mat.”
When I am fighting the demons of perfectionism, procrastination (it’s twin sister) or am simply tired, I remind myself that it is okay just to do what I can. Offered with an open heart, and resolve to return later, it can carry me through some of life’s dips.

I would have to say that the best advice I received was when I was about 28 years old. I was told, “Find a company where your personality fits with the culture. That way you can ‘be yourself’ and succeed along the way, leading to satisfaction and fulfillment.”
